![]() SAN DIEGO, CA - Though the closer job firmly belongs to Chad Qualls for 2010, the Padres today selected Daniel Bard with another second round rookie draft pick. The relief pitcher consistently throws a fastball clocking in at 98-99 MPH, and has hit 101 MPH on the gun. Bard is 24 years old, hailing from Houston, Texas. He attended the University of North Carolina, pitching in relief for the Tar Heels. The Padres plan for him to work out of the bullpen in 2010, learning from the veteran Qualls. They hope Bard can inherit the closer role as early as 2011.
