SAN DIEGO, CA - The Padres have struck a deal with the New York Mets that will help their bullpen. In exchange for catcher George Kottaras, San Diego receives Gonzalez Germen, a 26-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic. He'll be making his major league debut when he gets into his first game.
Kottaras, a Padre for two seasons, became expendable when he was passed on the depth chart by Welington Castillo and Ryan Lavarnway. He did not seem destined to appear in many games in the Padres' 2014 season. In 2013, Kottaras caught 105 games and slammed 13 homers with 44 RBI. He hit .204 in his two San Diego seasons. "He was the best Canadian catcher I've ever managed," San Diego skipper Tim Stoops said.
