SAN DIEGO, CA - The San Diego Padres search for starting pitching answers took a positive step today with the acquisition of Nick Tepesch (left) from the Oakland A’s. Relief pitcher Chris Withrow will head north up the California coast to Oakland. Both players were selected in the 5th round of today’s rookie draft.

SAN DIEGO, CA – Looking to address major holes in the starting rotation, the San Diego Padres orchestrated a rare 3-team trade to bring back Joe Blanton, a major cog in the 2010 World Series championship roster, from the Washington Nationals. Ted Lilly is on his way to the Oakland A’s from San Diego, while Jose Mijares moves to the capital city from Oakland. Blanton, traded to the Nationals following the 2011 season, appeared in 31 games (30 starts) last year. He had a 15-10 record to go along with a 4.24 ERA. “If we can’t get pitching help in the draft, Blanton is a nice, and familiar, insurance policy,” manager Tim Stoops explained. Lilly had been acquired earlier this offseason from the Kansas City Royals. Mijares pitched in 66 games for the A’s in 2013 to the tune of a 3.32 ERA. The lefty had a 2-2 record with 2 saves. |
