SAN DIEGO, CA - The Padres, after many years of trying, were at last able to add pitcher Tim Stauffer (left) to the roster thanks to a deal that sends pitcher Brad Boxberger to the Philadelphia Phillies. "I'm ecstatic to finally get Stauffer in San Diego," manager Tim Stoops said. "We gave up someone younger to get him, but Stauff's proven. He has a track record in this league. That's valuable." 2013 was a season lost to injury for Stauffer, but he hopes to rebound in a big way as part of the Padres pitching staff. He's started and relieved during his Phillies tenure. He's expected to find a home San Diego's bullpen, for now. Boxberger, a potential future closer, was an undrafted rookie signing of the Padres two months ago. If he pitches in a game for the Phillies, he'll be making his PGL-MLB debut.

SAN DIEGO, CA - The Padres have struck a deal with the New York Mets that will help their bullpen. In exchange for catcher George Kottaras, San Diego receives Gonzalez Germen, a 26-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic. He'll be making his major league debut when he gets into his first game.
Kottaras, a Padre for two seasons, became expendable when he was passed on the depth chart by Welington Castillo and Ryan Lavarnway. He did not seem destined to appear in many games in the Padres' 2014 season. In 2013, Kottaras caught 105 games and slammed 13 homers with 44 RBI. He hit .204 in his two San Diego seasons. "He was the best Canadian catcher I've ever managed," San Diego skipper Tim Stoops said. SAN DIEGO, CA - Just one week after reacquiring pitcher Joe Blanton, the Padres have brought another member of the 2010 World Series championship roster back. This time, it's Kevin Slowey (left) returning to Padre brown and yellow. To get Slowey from the Miami Marlins, the Padres had to send relief pitcher Brad Brach east. Last season, Slowey was not on a PGL-MLB roster. The right-hander had been struggling since San Diego traded him to the Phillies following the 2011 season. Ready to resurrect his career, he threw his name into the rookie draft, hoping to find a new home. When no one selected him, the Marlins took a flier and signed him to a low-risk contract. Brach, an undrafted free agent last season, turned heads in his rookie season. The 6'6" right-hander struck out 115 batters in 91 1/3 innings. "We haven't had many relievers achieve 100 strikeouts in one season. For Brach to do that for us last year, that came out of nowhere," manager Tim Stoops reflected. Slowey, the Padres' second-round pick back in 2008, figures to settle in as the team's 4th or 5th starter for now. SAN DIEGO, CA - The San Diego Padres search for starting pitching answers took a positive step today with the acquisition of Nick Tepesch (left) from the Oakland A’s. Relief pitcher Chris Withrow will head north up the California coast to Oakland. Both players were selected in the 5th round of today’s rookie draft. SAN DIEGO, CA – Looking to address major holes in the starting rotation, the San Diego Padres orchestrated a rare 3-team trade to bring back Joe Blanton, a major cog in the 2010 World Series championship roster, from the Washington Nationals. Ted Lilly is on his way to the Oakland A’s from San Diego, while Jose Mijares moves to the capital city from Oakland. Blanton, traded to the Nationals following the 2011 season, appeared in 31 games (30 starts) last year. He had a 15-10 record to go along with a 4.24 ERA. “If we can’t get pitching help in the draft, Blanton is a nice, and familiar, insurance policy,” manager Tim Stoops explained. Lilly had been acquired earlier this offseason from the Kansas City Royals. Mijares pitched in 66 games for the A’s in 2013 to the tune of a 3.32 ERA. The lefty had a 2-2 record with 2 saves. SAN DIEGO, CA - A small deal involving infielders was made today between NL West foes. The San Diego Padres received Matt Tolbert, sending Felipe Lopez one state over to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tolbert is viewed as insurance at second base if the Padres can’t address the need in the upcoming rookie draft. With Brent Morel expected to be the team’s starting third baseman in 2012, the Padres felt at ease in letting Lopez go. “The guy hit .216 and made 24 errors in a season where we lost the division by one game! I won’t miss him,” manager Tim Stoops boldly stated. SAN DIEGO, CA - The hoarding of rookie draft picks continued today for the San Diego Padres when they sent catcher John Buck to the Milwaukee Brewers for 4th and 5th round picks, and pitcher David Purcey. Buck, a 2005 1st round pick, played in 652 games for the Padres, slugging 99 home runs. He saved his finest season for the end, hitting .296 with 24 homers and 85 RBI in 2011. “We want more picks because we think there’s a lot of talent in this year’s draft. Buck was expendable with Nick Hundley around,” manager Tim Stoops explained. SAN DIEGO, CA - Will Venable, outfielder and 2010 World Series hero, is on his way out of San Diego. The young outfielder is making his way up the California coast after the Padres completed a trade with the San Francisco Giants. In return, the Padres received San Francisco’s 3rd round rookie draft pick. After hitting only 2 home runs during the 2010 regular season, Venable stepped to the plate in Game 7 of the World Series with 2 outs, a man on, and his team down by 2 runs. In a moment fans will never forget, Venable smashed a Jonathan Papelbon fastball deep into the right field seats in Anaheim for a game-tying home run. “Will had the biggest at-bat in team history since I took over,” manager Tim Stoops commented. “Our backs were against the wall and Will came through. It’s tough to see him go.” SAN DIEGO, CA - With the 2011 season completed, the Padres began planning for the 2012 season by trading second baseman Orlando Hudson to the Baltimore Orioles for a 4th round rookie draft pick and relief pitcher Trevor Bell. Originally acquired for shortstop Adam Everett, Hudson had been a Padre since the 2004 season, having played more games at second base than any other Padre since 1995. He was an All-Star in 2004 and won 4 consecutive Gold Gloves from 2006-2009. “We wanted to get something for O-Dog while we still could. He’s not getting any younger,” manager Tim Stoops commented. SAN DIEGO, CA - Today the Padres added to their bench by selecting veteran utility infielder Alex Cora (left) in the second round of the 2011 Waiver Draft. Cora's selection completes the Padres' 2011 roster. Cora adds experience to the backup infielder group. "We have a lot of youth on our bench. We felt it would be best to grab a guy that's done it for many years and is able to play any position." |
